Of seeing myself through her portraits and the session: There was something about seeing my own body as a woman, rather than a child. A Chinese woman. It made me realize I made it, I made it this far. Alive. Because my mom died when I was younger, and there were not many people ahead of me that I saw (i.e. lack of representation in US media), I really didn’t think I would make it this far. I didn’t think I would be alive to be this old. To be a woman. When I looked into the future, it looked empty. But through her portraits, I saw myself as a woman for the first time. I saw that I made it here, alive. Beautiful, thriving, and alive. I am here. I really am here. And I have the chance to live a long, long life.
